Drink spiking can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, age, or what they are drinking. It can involve alcohol or drugs being added to a drink without someone's knowledge or consent, meaning even water or a soft drink can be spiked.
Women are disproportionately affected, but men can be victims too. UK surveys suggest that around 1 in 10 women and 1 in 20 men report having experienced drink spiking. And the true number is likely difficult to know because most incidents are never reported: recent research suggests that around 90% of suspected drink-spiking incidents are not reported to the police.
It also isn't necessarily a stranger who does it. A person responsible may be someone the victim knows or trusts.
The bottom line: you don't have to be drinking alcohol, and you don't have to be alone, to be at risk.
Substances commonly used
- Central nervous system depressants: GHB and GBL, fast-acting sedatives that cause profound incapacitation and muscle weakness.
- Sedatives and tranquilizers: benzodiazepines such as Rohypnol, Xanax, or Valium, and prescription sleep aids, all of which multiply heavily when combined with alcohol.
- Dissociatives: ketamine, which strips coordination, creates detachment, and impairs reaction time.
- Concentrated alcohol: unannounced extra spirits or grain alcohol added to a non-alcoholic drink or a low-ABV mix.
Why it goes unnoticed
Most of these substances are colorless, odorless, and tasteless once mixed into a drink, so a spiked drink usually looks, smells, and tastes no different from normal. That's exactly why an open, unwatched drink is the actual point of vulnerability, not any single method someone might use. Sealing the drink shut removes that opening entirely, whatever the substance.
Onset and effects
- Rapid motor loss: heavy limbs, slurred speech, sudden loss of balance, and extreme clumsiness.
- Sudden, disproportionate intoxication: feeling severely incapacitated within 15 to 30 minutes, even with little to no alcohol consumed.
- Sensory and memory gaps: blurred vision, confusion, nausea, and partial or total memory blackouts.
If you or someone with you shows these signs suddenly and out of proportion to what they've had to drink, treat it as a medical situation: get them somewhere safe, stay with them, and get medical help.

Yes. Drink tampering relies on an open liquid surface, the kind where a pill or powder can be dropped in silently in two seconds. Nitevault removes that surface entirely. Once you snap the 2-bar hermetic base clamp and twist-lock the sip nozzle shut, the pouch has no exposed opening left for anything to be dropped into. Releasing the base clamp takes deliberate, two-handed mechanical force, force you'd feel instantly against your ribs since the pouch rides inside the holster against your torso. Any attempt to get at your drink means physically fighting that seal, and if the seal is closed, it can't be accessed without an unmistakable physical sign.
It means we're in the process of applying for B Corp certification, a status designed for early-stage companies meeting high standards of verified social and environmental performance. We're not certified yet, and we'll say so plainly here until we are.
It's durable enough for multi-day festival refills, and the film is formulated to target EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 industrial compostability standards once you're done with it. It's designed to be compostable, not landfill plastic in disguise.
